The First Night Home — What I’d Do Differently
Camilla ReyesI still remember every second of our first night home with Luna. After days in the hospital, I thought I was ready to bring her home and settle in. I pictured us cozy on the couch, wrapped up in soft blankets, maybe getting a little sleep between feeds.
In reality? It was nothing like that.
Walking Through the Door
Walking through our front door with Luna felt huge — like crossing an invisible line between before and after. The house felt too quiet, yet every tiny noise made my heart race. I suddenly realized how many little details I hadn’t thought through. Did I have everything within reach? Was the crib ready? Did I know where the diapers were in the dark at 2 AM?
What I Didn’t Expect
I didn’t expect how emotional I’d feel. After all the excitement, the calm of home felt almost too calm. I remember holding Luna while she slept on my chest, trying to stay awake because I was terrified something would go wrong if I closed my eyes.
Looking back, I wish I’d asked for more help. A friend had brought over thoughtful baby gifts Phoenix moms love — soft blankets, tiny hats, little essentials — but what I really needed that first night was practical support too. Someone to make sure I ate, to hold Luna while I showered, or to remind me to sleep, even just for an hour.
What I’d Do Differently
If I could redo that first night, here’s what I’d change:
-
Prep a Little Station: I’d set up a “night survival kit” by the bed — water, snacks, burp cloths, extra diapers, nipple cream, my charger. In the middle of the night, getting up to look for things felt huge.
-
Accept More Help: I’d say yes when people offered to drop by or bring food. I thought I had to do it all alone that first night — but I didn’t.
-
Trust Myself More: I spent so much energy Googling every tiny sound Luna made. Next time, I’d remind myself that newborns are noisy sleepers, and that I did know how to care for her.
-
Use the Baby Gifts: Some of the thoughtful baby gifts Phoenix friends gave me stayed in their pretty boxes for too long. If you have soft swaddles, cozy sleep sacks, or soothing balms — use them! The first night is exactly the moment for a little extra comfort.
What Really Mattered
Even though it was overwhelming, that first night home is one of my most vivid memories. It was imperfect, messy, exhausting — and so full of love. Luna slept on my chest while I whispered that I was learning too, right along with her.
If you’re about to bring your baby home, be gentle with yourself. Prepare what you can, ask for help, and lean on every bit of love and support — even if it’s just a soft blanket or a tiny hat from thoughtful baby gifts Phoenix friends gave you.
